In the Stairway Gate Installation Kit (Model K12), KidCo has assembled the materials and fasteners necessary to properly install any child safety gate to stairway banisters, without drilling into your expensive, decorative wood.
One kit is required for each side of the gate that is being mounted to a banister; and only the most basic tools are needed to assemble any good child safety gate.
For use at the top or bottom of stairs with hardware or pressure mount gates. The hardware is designed to fit square posts 2 1/2in - 3 5/8in wide or use the included insert for round post installation.

Functions Well, But Instructions Are In Small Print, Do Not Depict Parts, Fail to Mention Tools Needed, and Have Swapped Figures

(This item is not to be confused with KidCo Safety Gate Installation Kit or Kidco Gate Installation Kit or The KidCo Gate Installation Kit model K10 which has hardware such as screws and plastic tie straps, but no clamps.)
I wanted to put a pressure-mounted baby safety gate at the bottom of stairs that have a banister (i.e., handrail and balusters) on one side, but I didn't want to drill holes into the newel (i.e., the thick post typically at the end of a bannister). Also, the newel was about 3" wide, which looked too large for Y Spindle for Gate Installation (2 Pack) from KidCo or Safety Innovations GM6 Baluster Mounting Kit by Safety Innovations.
This product worked great after installation on the square and round parts of the newel. The pressure-mounted gate is secure against it (and the manufacturer claims that it also works with gates that would otherwise be screwed into a wall).
However, installation took about 30 minutes, which could have been shorter if the trilingual (English, Spanish, French) instructions had been better. You can see the instructions (aka "user guide") at the Kidco Web site. It has the following problems: (1) The font is quite small. (2) It has no diagrams of the 10 types of parts (clamp fronts, clamp backs, bolts, wood blocks, shims, round post adapters, finish washers, 1-1/2" screws, 1-3/4" screws, and a 36"x1"x2" wood piece). These would have been especially helpful for people who are not mechanically inclined, or for people whose first language is not English, español, or français. (3) It does not specify what tools are needed for installation: a Phillips screwdriver (to attach the clamps to the baluster), a level (to make the 36" wood piece perpendicular to the floor), a drill with 5/32" bit (to connect the 36" wood piece to the wood blocks inside the clamps), and a saw and sandpaper (if the 36" wood piece needs to be cut shorter). (4) The pictures for Figure 2 and Figure 4 are swapped. Figure 2 is supposed to show the round post adapters and Figure 4 is supposed to show the installed gate.
So I'm giving the product 5 stars and the instructions 3 stars, for an average of 4 stars.

Make sure you have enough space around your newel post

The instructions for this product suck but it's sort of a commonsense type of installation anyway. Upon opening and beginning installation procedures, we realized that the newel post is too close to the next baluster/spindle and the entire installation kit has been rendered useless!
WARNING: Must have at least 1.5 inches of space next to your newel post in order for the bulky plastic clamp in this installation kit to work. I would just take out the spindle, but then my toddler could just crawl through the sizable hole that would be left in its absence which would defeat the whole purpose of having a baby gate on the stairs.
I felt kind of stupid for not thinking about how much room might be needed next to the newel post before I ordered the product, but I didn't want anyone else to make the same mistake. Measure how much room you'll have for the clamp before you buy this kit and waste your money like I did.

This product does the advertised job and does it reasonably well. All together I put up four of them, but they haven't really been yanked or pulled on so far so I can't comment on their durability. The clamp kits are fairly sturdy plastic with an optional rubber insert inside to keep from marring bannisters too much and to keep the clamps from rotating around a round bannister. The included 36" long wood pieces are a nice hard wood, oak perhaps. Essentially you screw the hardwood pieces into the wood inserts in the clamps that go around your bannisters. The problem is that the screws that came with the kit are so cheap that if you even slightly overtighten them, or worse, have to back them out and re-tighten, they are certain to strip. Pre-drilling the holes is a must in hardwood, and it wasn't enough to save these cheap screws. The bolts that hold the clamp parts together are a little better, if only because they aren't being screwed into hardwood. They still strip a little and the threading isn't very smooth on some of them.
Do yourself a favor, and don't even consider using the screws that come with this kit. Throw them out right away so you won't accidentally use them with anything else either. Buy some higher quality 1.5" screws. Also since the 36" wood pieces are 3/4" thick, you'll probably want 3/4" wood screws to use when you screw your gate into the bannister kit. Otherwise, the longer screws that came with your gate will go through the wood piece and leave a sharp point sticking out.
It's a shame they tried to save a couple cents by including such poor quality hardware when overall the kit is much better than other similar options that use velcro of all things. I think these will work in my case. If they are really going to be subject to a lot of rough use you would probably be better off drilling the gate into your bannisters and fixing or replacing them later.
